Attorney Colby Lessmann AEP® is a graduate of the University of South Dakota School of Business (B.S. 1996) and School of Law (J.D. 1999). He is admitted to practice law in the United States Supreme Court, United States Court of Federal Claims, United States Federal Court (Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota), and United States Appellate Court (8th Circuit), as well as Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska state courts. Colby handles estate planning (e.g. wills, trusts, durable and medical powers of attorney, living wills, will contests, special needs trusts, Medicaid trusts a/k/a “Miller Trusts”), probate, real estate property (e.g. purchase agreements, contracts, leases, deeds), landlord-tenant (e.g. evictions, collections), business collections, personal injury (e.g. car accidents, slip and fall accidents, wrongful death claims), guardianships/conservatorships, judgment enforcement and collections, garnishment, business matters (e.g. corporations, nonprofit corporations, limited liability corporations, partnerships, contracts, leases, deeds, succession planning), collection litigation, commercial litigation, and general litigation matters. With Colby, your consultation is always free! Colby was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa. Fun fact: Colby is a second-generation Sioux City lawyer. His father practiced law in Siouxland for nearly twenty-five years. In addition to his father, Colby has three other family members who are also attorneys. During law school, Colby published a casenote in the South Dakota Law Review (1998) and was both the Managing and Production Editor for Volume 44 of the South Dakota Law Review (1998-1999). He clerked with the South Dakota Supreme Court in Pierre before returning to Sioux City to join a private practice. Colby is a member of the Iowa Association for Justice, Iowa Academy of Trusts and Estate Counsel, and Siouxland Estate Planning Council, as well as various state and local bar associations. In 2020, Colby was certified as an Accredited Estate Planner (AEP®) designee by the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils in recognition of his experience, knowledge, education, and professional reputation involving estate planning and probate matters.
